New York Magazine's technology group builds and maintains the editorial platforms behind one of the country's most recognized media brands, spanning properties including Vulture, The Cut, Grub Street, and the magazine's news and politics coverage. Work on that team spanned the full stack, from breaking news to long form features to the print archive.
The platforms run on Clay, the group's custom Node.js content management system, built to keep pace with a newsroom that never really stops. One contribution still in use today is an image interaction module that lets a reader zoom an image to fill the viewport and zoom back out to its exact original position on the page, regardless of where that image sits in the layout. It is a small piece of interface behavior that readers likely never think twice about, which is exactly the point. It was an environment where technical decisions had immediate, visible consequences, and where dependable infrastructure let the editorial side move fast without breaking things.
